St. John’s Episcopal Church founded its Parish Day School for preschool and Kindergarten in 1965 after constructing a new building on its campus for its growing Sunday School attendance. When the church later launched an ‘Expanding Ministries’ project for Christian education programs, youth activities and other ministry functions it also decided to expand its day school to include grades 1 through 5. The 54,000 square foot Center for Ministry and Education is now used by the school on weekdays for 366 students and by the church on weekends and evenings for its activities.
To accommodate all of these programs, the preschool’s existing 1965 era classrooms, corridors, commons, auditorium and bathrooms were completely renovated and the existing dining room was converted into a Media Center all while keeping the preschool in operation. Two new wings were constructed adjacent to the renovated preschool to house the new Lower School and a large multipurpose room used for worship, sports and dining with a commercial kitchen. The renovated building and the new wings are linked together by a new 2 story Commons.
Associated site work included a storm water management system including bio-retention and underground retention, driveways, parking, utilities and extensive landscaping.
